Matted hair at the roots is a common thing that happens with extension-wearer. And if you ever had semi-permanent hair extensions I’m sure you have faced this problem before and you know that tangled hair near the scalp can become nothing but a nightmare.

No matter whether you wear a reputed brand, your hair at the roots is not immune to the possibility of matting in a way or another. Thankfully, there are some easy ways to make sure your hair and extension bonds stay tangle-free and seamless. Let me discuss how to prevent hair extensions from matting!

MATTED HAIR EXTENSIONS: WHAT ARE THEY?

Matting happens when your hair extensions and natural hair bundle somewhere along your scalp, leading to bonds to tangle with each other. As time passes, your hair’s matted area will develop more with more hair strands getting intertwined. It is not at all difficult to take care of the matting issue of hair extensions when it starts first. However, if left ignored, the matted area of your hair will grow as fixing this issue will become tougher.

MAIN REASONS YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS BECOME MATTED AT THE ROOT

The poor aftercare routine has been recognized as one of the prime reasons behind matting. Aftercare of the hair extension is not a tough job; however, some rules are there that you should follow to make the hair extensions easy to handle to prevent them from tangling. If you are wearing permanent hair extensions like weaves, micro rings, tapes, fusions, etc, your hair can get tangled near the roots. And this happens if the bond area has not been handled properly amid wear. So, correct hair extensions’ care is important. Let me reveal 5 reasons why your hair extensions become matted at the root!

1. IMPROPER BRUSHING ROUTINE OF YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS

Brushing your hair 3 times a day for 2-3 minutes can easily save you from your hair extensions getting matter or tangled. Especially you have to pay attention to your root area. If you start having any little tangles near your scalp one pass of a brush may save you from the formation of larger tangles in the future.

2. NOT SEPARATING BONDS OF YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS

On average a person sheds about 100 hairs a day. When you have hair extensions the shed hair gets trapped in the bonds. With time the bond accumulates more and more loose hair that starts to tangle with the loose hair from other bonds. And that is a normal process and is to be expected. However, what one day may seem like a little tangle the next day will become larger if not separated. You do not want this happening to your hair because as quick as a little tangle becomes a mess as hard it is to untangle it. So separating your extension bonds is a prime thing to do and must be done every day. This may sound tedious but believe me, once you start doing it frequently it will soon become your favourite habit because who does not like when their hair gets a little scratch or a massage. Besides, all you have to do is run your finger between the bonds to detangle every hair strand that might have tangled. Doing this routinely prevents your hair bonds from intertwining, finally cutting out your hair matting.

3. NOT BRAIDING YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP

This relates to everyone who has hair extensions even if you think you do not move much while you sleep. Your hair extensions should be secured over the night to prevent matting near the roots that may happen from friction when you turn while you sleep. Just put your hair in a loose braid or low ponytail in case your hair is short.

4. GOING TO BED WITH HAIR EXTENSIONS WET

Do not wash your hair at night if you do not have time to dry your hair extensions completely. When you go to bed with wet or damp hair, you are running into a high risk of your hair becoming a nest in a root area over just one night! So unless you have the intention to severely tangle your roots, make sure your hair is 100% dry before going to bed.

5. POOR APPLICATION OF HAIR EXTENSIONS AT HAIR EXTENSION SALON

Needless to say, you have to be careful when you choose a hair extension salon when you decided on doing hair extensions. Take a look at their work before making any decisions. And I talk not about long beautiful shiny hair on before and after picture, I talk about the rows of fitted extensions. If the rows are messy the hair will start to matte at the roots as soon as you stand from the stylist chair and will become a big problem soon after you leave a salon. So make sure you trust your hair to a skilled professional.

HOW TO PREVENT HAIR EXTENSIONS FROM MATTING

  1. Use a loop or a boar bristle brush for hair extensions and brush your hair for at least 2-3 minutes 3 times a day.

  2. Run your fingers between your bonds every day to separate any little tangles.

  3. Keep your hair secured in a loose braid while slipping.

  4. Schedule time for when to wash hair extensions so you can manage time for it to dry completely before going to sleep. You can use dry shampoo if you have no time to dry your hair at night and was your hair sometime during the next day.

  5. Do not wash your roots and bonds vigorously while washing your extensions. Dilute shampoo in a bottle and apply gently to the bonds using a colour application bottle. Try to wash your extensions in a certified hair extensions salon only for better results.

CONCLUSION: WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU HAVE YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS MATTED

So if you faced this problem and you cannot solve it by implementing my recommendations above do not wait for too long before visiting your hair extensionist for maintenance or removal. Matted hair will not magically untangle when you wake up in the morning, on the contrary it will get worse the longer you wait. And it is not possible to detangle severely matted roots when the bonds are in place. Hence, removal is a single choice. Once your hair extensions start to mate at the roots think of it as a bell that you have to pay a back visit to your hair extension salon.
